Viola tricolor / Wild Pansy or Heart's Ease / Seeds

The Wild Pansy is a British and European wildflower with masses of long-lasting flowers throughout the summer from April to September.  Plants flower in varying shades of blue, often with purple, yellow and white variants and markings.  They grow to a height of 20-30cm.  Good for edging, pots, rockeries and coastal gardens and in wilder spaces.  They are attractive to pollinators.

Wild Pansies grow best in sun or part shade and well-drained neutral to acidic soils. They grow well in containers.  These plants are used as a traditional herbal medicine and the flowers are edible, often used in salads and for cake decorations.

Pack of approx 200 seeds.  Sow the seeds in spring to autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy annual / short-lived perennial (RHS Hardiness H7)
Flowers April to September
Height 20 - 30cm
Spread 20cm
Conditions  Full sun to part shade and well-drained neutral to acidic soil
Sow Sow the seeds in spring to autumn.  Sow on the surface of a tray of compost.  Press the seeds lightly into the compost.   Keep at around 20°C and germination takes 2-3 weeks.  Do not exclude light, which helps germination.  Transplant seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle and out into the garden after the last frost.  Protect summer/autumn seedlings over the winter in a greenhouse or cold frame before hardening off and planting out in early spring.
Grow Plants are cold tolerant and can be planted out when conditions are frosty, provided they are hardened off first.  Deadhead plants to prolong flowering.  Leave some spent flowers on the plants towards the end of the season to encourage self-seeding.  Discard any dead plants after they have finished flowering.  Most plants live for 2 to 3 years, depending on the conditions
