Verbena rigida / Slender Vervain / Seeds

Slender Vervain is a naturally compact upright Verbena with square stems and violet purple pompom flowerheads all summer, from June to October.  Plants grow to a height of 30-50cm and look good planted in drifts. These are great border plants, also good for edging, growing well in containers and suitable for just about any garden.  Pollinators love these plants.

Verbena rigida grows best in full sun and moist well-drained soil.  It seems to be hardier than its reputation, growing underground rhizomes that typically survive year after year, especially if the crown is mulched over winter.  Or the rhizomes can be lifted and stored over winter and replanted in spring.  Plants self-seed in favoured locations.  These can be grown as annuals in colder gardens as they flower in the first year.

Pack of approx 250 seeds.  Sow in spring/summer in a tray of seed compost or sow in autumn/winter in a coldframe, leave outside over winter and seeds start to germinate in the spring.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy deciduous perennial (RHS Hardiness H3/4)
Flowers June to October
Height 30 - 50cm
Spread 30 - 50cm
Conditions  Full sun and moist well-drained soil
Sow Sow in late autumn/winter on the surface of a tray of moist seed compost, add a clear cover and place outside in a cold-frame.  The cold breaks seed dormancy and seedlings emerge in the warmth of spring/early summer.  Or sow seeds in spring/summer in a tray of moist compost and keep at 15-20°C.  Seeds germinate in 3-6 weeks.  Harden off seedlings before planting out.  Pinch out the growing tips of plants when planting out and this encourages a branched habit.
Grow Plants normally flower in the first year, and can be grown as annuals.  Cut back spent flowers during the growing season.  Plants die down in winter, when dead plant material can be tidied up.  Mulch the crowns in winter or lift the rhizomes, store in a cool dry place and replant in spring.  Plants start growing again in the spring.  Stem tip cuttings take well in spring and summer.
