Verbascum thapsus / Great Mullein / British Wildflower Seeds

A tall Verbascum with silver to grey-green leaves and yellow flowers on tall stalks from June to August.  An adaptable plant for borders, Mediterranean/dry gardens and wilder areas, adding height and architectural drama.  Plants form a rosette of leaves in the first year and flower in the second up to a height of 2 - 2.5m.  They attract butterflies and bees into the garden.

Great Mullein grows best in full sun and well-drained neutral to alkaline soils.  They are drought tolerant once established and cold tolerant.

Pack of approx 1000 seeds.  Sow indoors in spring to summer or sow directly into cultivated soil in autumn.   Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy biennial (RHS Hardiness H6)
Flowers June to August
Height 2 - 2.5m
Spread 40 - 60cm
Conditions  Full sun to part shade and well-drained neutral to alkaline soil
Sow Sow the seeds indoors from spring into summer.  Sow the small seeds sparingly onto the surface of a tray of seed compost.  Press the seeds into the compost and do not exclude light, which helps germination.  Keep the tray at room temperature (15 - 20 degrees Celsius) and germination takes 2-4 weeks.  Pot on the seedlings and plant into their final position in summer to autumn.  Or sow the seeds outdoors directly into prepared ground in late summer to early autumn.
Grow Plants grow a rosette of leaves in the first season and flower in the second season.  Some plants may survive a few years as short-lived perennials but most die in the autumn after flowering.  Scatter the seeds into the ground to encourage self-seeding if you want plants to establish themselves in your garden.
