Verbascum nigrum / Dark Mullein / Seeds

Dark Mullein is a tall plant with rich yellow and purple-centred flowers from May/June to September.  Plants grow a hairy rosette of leaves and then a flower spike 60-120cm tall.  These are great plants for wilder parts of your garden and for naturalistic borders.  Mullein helps wildlife to survive in the garden by providing nectar, seeds and shelter.

Dark Mullein grows best in part shaded to sunny situations in well drained neutral to alkaline soils. Plants self-seed in the right conditions.

Pack of approx 1000 seeds.  Sow indoors in spring to autumn or sow directly into cultivated soil in autumn.   Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Grown in Cornwall

Hardiness Hardy semi-evergreen biennial or short-lived perennial (RHS Hardiness H6)
Flowers May/June to September
Height 60 - 120cm
Spread 60cm
Conditions  Full sun to part shade and well-drained neutral to alkaline soil
Sow Sow the seeds in spring onto the surface of a tray of moist compost, and press the seeds gently into the compost.  Keep at around 20°C and germination takes 3-6 weeks.  Transfer seedlings to pots when they are big enough to handle.  Harden off seedlings before planting out.  Or sow the seeds directly into cultivated soil in autumn.
Grow Plants grow a rosette of leaves, and flower spikes follow in the same or second year.  The rosettes are semi-evergreen and may die back in colder winters and regrow in spring.  Verbascums can be propagated from root cuttings in autumn/winter when the plant is dormant.  Plants self-seed in the right conditions.
