Tithonia rotundifolia 'Goldfinger' / Mexican Sunflower / Seeds

Mexican Sunflowers are showy border plants, similar to Dahlias and Zinnias in appearance.  This ‘Goldfinger’ variety grows to a height of 70-100cm, with large single orange-gold flowers in mid to late summer, typically July to October.  Plants have a bushy and upright form, and the tall flower stalks make good cut flowers.  Pollinators love them.

Mexican Sunflowers grow best in a sunny spot and not-too-fertile well drained soil. They are drought tolerant once established.

Pack of approx 200 seeds. Sow under cover in spring and plant out into the garden after the risk of frost has passed.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Half hardy annual (RHS Hardiness H2)
Flowers July to October
Height 70 - 100cm
Spread 40 - 50cm
Conditions  Sun and well drained soil
Sow Sow in spring in a tray or modules of compost.  Keep at 15-20°C and germination takes 2-3 weeks.  Pot on and grow until ready to plant out into the garden after the last frost in a sunny spot.
Grow Plants need little attention once established.   They may need staking in more exposed gardens.  Deadhead to prolong flowering and clear away the plants in the winter once they have died back.  Sow fresh seed again in spring. These are natural perennial plants from much warmer climes, and they may survive frost-free winters in warmer gardens to live many years.  They are naturally deciduous, so if you have a warm climate, clear away any dead plant material in winter and leave the rest of the plant in the soil and the plants may resprout in the spring.
