Thyme English Winter / Thymus vulgaris / Seeds

A darker leaved and hardier form of English Thyme, which is a great culinary and medicinal herb.  These are attractive and sweet smelling plants, with small dark green leaves. Plants have good robust growth, reaching a height of about 30cm, with pale pinkish flowers in mid-summer.   They can be grown in pots and in the garden, making good edging plants.

English Thyme grows best in sun and well-drained soil. It can be kept indoors and out.   For cooking, the leaves can be used fresh or dried and are great for seasonings and stuffings.

Pack of approx 3000 seeds.  Sow indoors all year, or sow outdoors directly into cultivated soil in spring and autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the seed packet.

Hardiness Hardy evergreen perennial herb (RHS Hardiness H6)
Flowers Mid summer
Height 30cm
Spread 60-100cm
Conditions  Sun and well drained soil
Sow For indoor cultivation: Sow year-round on the surface of moist seed compost in trays or pots.  Do not cover with compost, and keep at 20°C. Germination takes 2-3 weeks.  Water sparingly and give the plants good light.   For outdoor cultivation: Sow in late spring or autumn directly in the soil in rows 30cm apart, and thin seedlings to 20cm apart.  Sow in a sunny place with well-drained soil.  Pinch out the tips of established seedlings to encourage a bushier habit.
Grow Harvest the younger leaves as they mature.  Trim back the plant just as flowers appear, to encourage new growth.  The aromatic leaves are used in seasonings and stuffings. Plants spread outwards from the centre. Control the size of mature plants by digging them up and dividing them in spring or autumn every three years.
