Tanacetum vulgare / Tansy / British Wildflower / Seeds

Tansy is an appealing scented British wildflower from the daisy family.  Plants have fern-like leaves and grow sturdy spikes of small yellow buttonhead flowers from July to September.  These are great informal border or wildflower plants for late summer colour, growing to a height of 60-100cm.  Plants are highly scented and are traditional medicines and effective insect repellents.

Tansy grows best in full sun and moist well-drained soils.  They tolerate exposed gardens and are generally untroubled by pests.

Pack of approx 1000 seeds.  Sow indoors in spring/summer and outdoors directly into prepared ground in late spring.  Germination can be erratic, so sow more than you need.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Grown in Cornwall.

Hardiness Hardy deciduous short-lived perennial (RHS Hardiness H7)
Flowers July to September
Height 60 - 100cm
Spread 30 - 50cm
Conditions  Sun and moist well drained soils
Sow Sow the seeds indoors in spring/summer into a tray of compost.  Clover lightly with compost, keep at around 20 degrees Celsius and germination takes 2-4 weeks.  If there is no germination within 4 weeks, move the tray to a fridge for 2-4 weeks, then back into the warmth and germination should start with a few weeks.  Germination is erratic.  Move seedlings to small pots when they are big enough to handle and into the garden after the last frost.  Or sow the seeds outdoors in late spring directly into prepared ground.
Grow Deadhead plants to encourage more flowers.  Cut back plants in winter after flowering, after which fresh growth appears in spring   Mature plants can be divided in autumn but plants often reproduce in the garden themselves through self-seeding.  This can be controlled by removing seedheads just after flowering.
