Santolina chamaecyprissus / Cotton Lavender / Seeds

A lovely ornamental dwarf shrub with silver grey foliage, growing 30-50cm in height. It has lots of soft button-like yellow flowerheads in July and August, although it is grown mostly for the fragrant foliage which contracts well with green-leaved Santolina rosmarinifolia and other green leaved plants.

This is a very adaptable plant and can be trimmed into an attractive small hedge.  The leaves are strongly fragrant when crushed and are good alongside a path.  Also good in a rock garden or dry gravel garden.

Santolina prefers a sunny and well drained position, in not-too-rich soil.  It can tolerate low watering once established and coastal sites, so a good low maintenance plant during the summer.

Pack of 50 seeds.  Sow anytime, most commonly January to May.  Easy to grow.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Flowers July to August/September
Height 30 - 50cm
Spread 50 - 100cm

Sow Sow anytime, typically spring to autumn.  Sow the seeds in moist seed compost and cover lightly with 1mm of compost or press the seeds gently into the surface of the compost.  Keep at 15-18°C and do not exclude light which is needed for germination.  Seedlings start to emerge in 3-4 weeks, with stragglers appearing for several months.  Pot on and grow until the plants are ready for the garden, and place in a sunny, well drained and not too fertile spot.
Grow These are evergreen plants and only need a light trim in the autumn after flowering.   Plants can be trimmed into a low hedge.  Plants are generally free of pests and diseases.  Semi-hardwood cuttings can be taken in late summer.
