Pennisetum macrourum 'Tail Feathers' or African Feather Grass / Seeds

A tall and graceful ornamental grass from Southern Africa, with soft beige flowers from June to September.  Ideal for a border where plants are shown at their best, growing to a height of about 180cm.  The flowers look attractive through the winter.

Pennisetum likes a moist, well-drained soil in sun or part shade.  It is easy to look after, with a tidy-up of dead leaves and flower heads in the spring.

Pack of 30 seeds.  Sow from early spring to autumn and germination takes 2-3 weeks.   Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Just hardy perennial
Flowers June to September
Height 180cm
Spread 60 - 100cm
Conditions  Sun and well-drained soil
Sow

Sow in spring or autumn.  Sow in cells or trays of moist seed compost and cover very lightly with 3-4mm of compost or vermiculite.  Do not exclude light, which is needed for germination.  Keep at 15 - 20°C and seedlings emerge in 2-3 weeks, sometimes a little longer.  Pot on and grow until the plants are ready for the garden, planting out when the soil is warm.

Grow

This is a deciduous grass which dies down in winter.  The old leaves and flower stems look good over winter and can be cut down in spring, when the plant starts to grow new leaves.  Plants need little attention once established.  Mature clumps can be divided in spring.  Plants are generally free of pests and diseases.
