Passiflora caerulea / Blue Passionflower / Climber / Seeds

This is one of the hardiest Passion Flowers and a great climbing plant for a UK garden.  Plants climb 10-12m in height and have wonderful large white flowers tinged with blue and purple, from July to September.

Passion Flowers grow best in sun to part shade and moist well drained soil.  They need a trellis or other form of support to climb up, and are vigorous plants once established.  They are hardy to about -10°C, so in colder gardens, grow in pots and bring indoors over winter.  They are happy pot plants.

Pack of 25 seeds.  Sow the seeds any time, typically in spring to autumn.  Germination takes 1 to several months and is erratic, so sow more than you need and be prepared to keep going.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Caution: Harmful if eaten.

Hardiness Hardy perennial climber (RHS Hardiness H4)
Flowers July to September
Height 10 - 12m
Spread 2 - 4m
Conditions  Sun to part shade and moist well drained soil
Sow Sow anytime, typically spring to autumn.  First scarify the seeds by rubbing them gently between two sheets of sandpaper.  Then soak them for 24 hours in warm water, and sow in a tray of compost.  Clover lightly with compost and keep at a warm 20-25°C.  Germination is erratic and takes 1 to several months, so be patient and keep going.  As seedlings emerge, transplant them into pots and move outside after hardening off.
Grow Plant young plants out into a sunny or part shaded position.  Tie the strongest shoots into a trellis or some form of support and keep the young plant(s) well watered.  Trim back flowering stems after flowering is finished and prune back plants if needed in early spring.  Semi hardwood cuttings can be taken in late summer.
