The Caucasian Scarlet Poppy is an upright plant with brilliant red flowers in summer, typically from June to August. The flowers have black markings that resemble a ladybird beetle, hence the name. Plants grow to a height of 30-50cm and look best grown in profusion in a meadow, wildflower garden and open borders.
This is a hardy annual plant which should be sown directly into cultivated ground in autumn and/or spring through to early summer. Several sowings at different times will give a longer display of flowers, with plants flowering about two months after germination in spring. Poppies flower best in full sun and will tolerate most soil types except heavy clay.
Best not to sow in seed trays, unless you sow in plug trays, as the roots don’t like disturbance and they may not establish well after transplanting.
