Miscanthus sinensis 'Early Hybrids' or Chinese Silver Grass / Seeds

Chinese Silver Grass is a tall and attractive ornamental grass.  Plants grow into upright clumps with tall plumes of flowers in late summer and autumn.  Plumes vary in shades of silver to pale pink.  Some are upright and others bend gracefully in the wind.  These are tall plants with plumes from 2 - 2.5m in height.  They look good grown singly in larger borders or pots.  They are excellent plants for winter interest.

These grasses grow best in full to part sun and moist but well-drained soils.

Pack of approx 50 seeds.
Sow the seeds in spring or autumn.   Germination is erratic, so sow more than you need.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy deciduous perennial grass (RHS Hardiness H6)
Flowers Late summer and autumn, plus a good winter display
Height 2 - 2.5m
Spread Approx 1m
Conditions  Sun to part shade and moist well-drained soils
Sow

Sow indoors in autumn or spring when the weather is mild but not warm.  Sow the seeds sparingly onto the surface of a tray or small pots of compost.  Press the seeds gently into the compost and cover very lightly with compost.  Keep at a cool 15-20 degrees Celsius and germination takes 3-4 weeks, sometimes several months.  Transplant seedlings into larger pots and then out into the garden after the last frost.

Grow

These grasses are deciduous and die back in winter leaving attractive dried plumes of flowers.  Remove the dead material in spring when plants start to regrow from the base.  Mature clumps can be divided in spring.  Plants are generally untroubled by pests.  They need well-drained soils to tolerate our wet UK winters.
