Mina lobata is an exotic-looking and fast growing climber. It has spires of showy flowers, starting out a brilliant red and fading into a pale yellow. These are great from mid to late summer colour, flowering from July to the first frost. Plants can be grown in the garden and in containers, and cover a wall or trellis in a season. Plants can be grown in hanging baskets if the growing tips are pinched out while the plants are young. Grow with the climber Thunbergia alata with hot Gazanias at the base for a great later summer display.
Mina lobata grows best in full to part sun and rich well-drained soil. Keep plants well fed, but switch from a nitrogen-based feed to a phosphate-based feed before flowering. Plants can be grown in a heated conservatory to extend flowering into winter.
