St John’s Wort is a traditional medicinal herb. It makes an interesting garden plant for herb and wildflower gardens and informal borders. Plants have a strong upright habit, growing to a height of about 1m. They have golden yellow flowers, with black dots along the edges, in June to July/August. The fresh flowers are harvested in June and July for traditional medicinal use.
St John’s Wort grows best in sun to light shade and moist free-draining neutral to slightly acidic soils. Plants are deciduous and die down in winter when they can be cut back. They start regrowing in spring.
