Herniaria are mat forming, low growing evergreen plants with tiny lime-green flowers in summer. They grow to a height of about 5cm and spread out to form a mat of leaves about 30cm across. These are very good plants for a lawn alternative, being evergreen, drought tolerant and soft under foot. They also look terrific nestled between paving stones, trailing over stone hedges, as fillers in patio pots and as ground cover. They are traditional medicinal plants.
These plants grow best in sun to part shade and well drained soils, tolerating poor soils and otherwise tough conditions. They need little maintenance once established with perhaps a tidy up in spring.
