Gloriosa superba / Flame Lily / Climber / Seeds

A climbing plant from Southern Africa whose spectacular scarlet and yellow striped flowers resemble a flame.  Plants climb to a height of about 2.5m and flowers appear in mid summer, from July to September.  Plants climb best with support – such as a trellis or frame.  They are widely grown as conservatory plants, but also flower well outside in warm sheltered situations protected from frost.

Grow the plants in full sun to part shade and rich well drained soil.  Plants grow well in larger pots, which can be brought in for the winter, or in warmer UK gardens, plants can be left outside in the ground in a sheltered and well drained position - covered in a thick layer of mulch once the leaves and shoots have died down in the autumn.

Pack of 10 seeds.  Sow in early spring to summer.   Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the heat-sealed packet.

All parts of the plant are considered toxic.

Hardiness Tender deciduous perennial climber (forms tubers) (RHS Hardiness H1c)
Flowers July to September
Height Up to 2.5m
Spread About 2m
Conditions  Sun and rich well drained conditions
Sow

Sow in spring to summer in a tray of seed compost.  Cover with 2mm of compost or vermiculite.  Keep at 20-22°C and germination takes 4-6 weeks, sometimes up to 4 months. Transplant seedlings into small pots and then out into the garden or into a large pot after the last frost.  Protect young plants from slugs and snails.

Grow Provide support for these climbing plants.  They die down in winter and re-grow in spring and are ideal plants for growing in pots and bringing indoors over winter before taking out again in the spring.  Plants form tubers, and these can be lifted and stored in winter and planted out again in late spring.  Plant tubers with the growing tips facing upwards at 3- 5cm below the soil surface.
