A climbing plant from Southern Africa whose spectacular scarlet and yellow striped flowers resemble a flame. Plants climb to a height of about 2.5m and flowers appear in mid summer, from July to September. Plants climb best with support – such as a trellis or frame. They are widely grown as conservatory plants, but also flower well outside in warm sheltered situations protected from frost.
Grow the plants in full sun to part shade and rich well drained soil. Plants grow well in larger pots, which can be brought in for the winter, or in warmer UK gardens, plants can be left outside in the ground in a sheltered and well drained position - covered in a thick layer of mulch once the leaves and shoots have died down in the autumn.
