Geissorhiza inflexa / Red Satin Flower / Seeds

This is a beautiful red form of Geissorhiza.  The flowers appear in spring, with small sword shaped leaves, growing to a height of about 20cm.  Flowers are generally red in colour, occasionally white, as there is some variation in colour for this species.  In the UK, they do best grown together in pots. In Mediterranean climates, they can be left outside.

Geissorhiza are easy to grow.  Plants do best in sun and rich well-drained soil.  Good conservatory plants.

Sow

Sow summer to autumn in pots of seed compost with and cover very lightly with vermiculite or grit.  Do not exclude light, which is needed for germination.  Keep at 10-20°C and germination takes 4-6 weeks, sometimes longer.  Feed the seedlings with liquid fertilizer every two weeks to help develop the corm.  Grow on into the second season before planting into final pots or outside. Flowering should start in the second or third season.  Protect young plants from slugs and snails.

Grow The main growing period is in the winter.  Plants die down after flowering in the spring.  The corms need to dry out in the summer after flowering, when they can be lifted and replanted in autumn, or left in pots with protection against hard frost.  Protect indoor plants from red spider mites.  Mature plants produce off-sets on the corms and these can be removed in summer when the plant is dormant and grown on into new plants.
