Galium odoratum / Sweet Woodruff / Seeds

Sweet Woodruff makes excellent ground cover.  It has star-shaped fragrant leaves and small decorative white flowers from April to June/July.  It spreads naturally into an attractive mat of leaves and flowers, growing to a height of 20-30cm.

Sweet Woodruff grows well in full to part shade and rich soil.  Although preferring moist soil, it will tolerate dry shade beneath trees, for example.

This is a widely used culinary and traditional medicinal herb.

Sow

Sow autumn to early spring in a tray of seed compost.  Keep outside and seeds germinate from late spring onwards (keep going for six months or more).  Or sow anytime in a seed tray and chill in a fridge for 4-6 weeks. Then move to room temperature and germination starts within a month and up to six months or more.  Prick out seedlings as they emerge and pot on.  Plant out in the garden after hardening off.  Divide mature plants in the spring or autumn when clumps get crowded.

Grow Plants die down in autumn, when the dead plant material can be removed.  They start growing again in spring.  Plants grow rhizomes which spread out gradually over time, making good ground cover.  Divide mature plants in spring or autumn when clumps get crowded.
