Festuca cinerea Glauca / Blue Fescue Grass / Seeds

A great ornamental grass growing in compact clumps of silvery-blue leaves, with pale creamy flower panicles in late spring to early summer, typically May to June.  Plants grow to a height of about 40cm and look good in containers or growing in drifts or rivers in borders.  They are drought tolerant and grow well in dry Mediterranean or gravel gardens as well as ornamental borders. 


Blue Fescue grows best in sun to part shade and a well drained soil which is poor to moderately fertile.

 

Packet of approx 600 seeds.  Seeds are typically sown in spring, but can be continued into early autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Sow

Sow the seeds in spring to autumn in a tray of seed compost.  Over the seeds lightly with compost and keep at around 20°C.  Germination takes 2-3 weeks.  Pot on young seedlings and plant out after the last frost when the plants are well established.  Seeds can be direct sown into cultivated ground in late spring, but germination can be erratic, so sow more than you need and thin out seedlings as necessary.
Grow

These are evergreen plants and do not die down in winter.  Tidy up old growth in the spring.  Plants look best if divided every three or so years, which is generally best done in spring.
