An unusual plant from South Africa with spectacular pineapple shaped flowers in middle to late summer, growing from a base of fleshy and wavy-edged leaves. Flowers grow on thick stalks up to 60cm tall and remain attractive well into the autumn.
These are good late summer flowering plants for pots, borders and alongside a driveway or path. Plants grow best in a sunny spot. They are nearly hardy, needing protection from frosts greater than -5°C. This can be done by mulching well in winter, or lifting bulbs in autumn and replanting in spring, or growing in pots which are moved into a greenhouse in winter.
