Dianthus deltoides 'Brilliant' / Maiden Pink / Seeds

An attractive first-year flowering perennial, with very striking iridescent red flowers from May to July/August.  These are sturdy, spreading plants with an upright habit which grow to a height of 15-20cm.  They look great in the front of borders, and in gravel gardens, rockeries and pots.  They spread out over the seasons, forming an impressive evergreen mat 50-100cm in width.

Maiden Pinks grow best in a sunny and part shaded position in free draining soil.

Pack of approx 200 seeds.  Sow the seeds in early spring for first year flowers, and late spring and summer for next year flowering.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy evergreen perennial (RHS Hardiness H6)
Flowers May to July/August
Height 15 - 20cm
Spread 50 - 100cm
Conditions  Full sun to part shade and well-drained soil.
Sow

Sow the seeds in early spring for first year flowers, and into late summer for next year flowering.  Sow the seeds into a tray of compost and add a light covering of compost.   Keep the tray at 15-20°C and germination takes 2-3 weeks.  Pot on the seedlings when they are big enough to handle and plant out after the last frost.  Protect late summer seedlings over the winter in a greenhouse or cold frame, before planting out in the spring.

Grow Plants establish themselves during the summer and autumn and flower the following spring and summer.  Deadhead to prolong flowering.  Cut back lightly after first flowering to encourage a second flush of flowers. Tidy up the plants in mid to late summer.  Plants spread out from the centre and rooted stems can be separated from the parent plant in spring and autumn for growing on.
