Crocosmia 'Orangerot' / Montbretia / Seeds

A lovely variety of Southern African Crocosmia with orange to red flowers in late summer.  Plants grow in clumps of iris-like leavers, with spikes of flowers from July to October.  This is a very good late summer border plant, growing to a height of about 60cm.  It does not need staking, it only needs tidying up once a year and it will spread naturally, but not invasively.   The flowers last well in a vase.

Crocosmia prefers to grow in sun to part shade in rich free draining soil.  Free draining soil prevents rotting of corms in the winter.  Plants grow naturally into clumps and flower best if divided in the spring every 3-4 years.

Pack of 30 seeds.  Sow spring to autumn.  Germination is erratic and can take up to two months.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy deciduous perennial (forms corms) (RHS Hardiness H5)
Flowers July to October
Height 60cm
Spread 40cm +
Conditions  Sun to part shade and hummus rich, well-drained soil.
Sow

Sow anytime, typically early spring into summer, into a tray of compost.  Cover the seeds lightly with compost and keep the tray at 15-20°C.  Germination starts in about 3 weeks and continues erratically up to two months, so do not discard the tray too quickly.  Pot on young seedlings and plant out after the last frost.  If planting out in autumn, mulch the plants over the first winter to protect them from harsh weather.

Grow Plants are deciduous and die back in the autumn after flowering, when they can be tidied up anytime up to spring.  New growth appears from underground corms in the spring.  Plants grow naturally into clumps and should be divided in spring every 3-4 years to keep them flowering well.  Replant the corms about 10cm deep.  Plants are not generally troubled by pests and diseases outside.  They can be affected by red spider mites under glass.
