Chervil / French Parsley / Anthriscus cerefolium/ Seeds

Chervil is a popular French herb, similar to Parsely.  Plants have feathery evergreen leaves and small white flowers in summer, growing to a height of 30–60cm.  The leaves can be cut at any time of year and have a mild aniseed flavour.  The leaves are used to flavour eggs, chicken and fish dishes, as an addition to salads, and as a garnish.  This herb is best used fresh.  The leaves can be frozen.

Chervil is a cool climate plant, need cooler and well watered conditions in fertile soil.  It is best grown in part shade in high summer and can be grown in direct sun in winter.  Plants thrive indoors if given enough light but not too dry or hot in summer. Chervil grows well in deeper containers.

Pack of approx 2000 seeds.
Sow the seeds from spring to late summer directly into the ground or into their final containers.  Leaves can start to be harvested as a cut-and-come-again herb about 6 weeks from sowing.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the seed packet.

Hardiness Hardy biennial (RHS Hardiness H4)
Height 30 - 60cm
Spread 20 - 30cm
Conditions  Part shade and fertile moist soils
Sow

Sow the seeds from April to August directly in the soil about 5cm apart in rows about 30cm apart.  The seedlings emerge in 2-3 weeks.  Once they are established, thin them out to about 15-20cm apart.   Seeds can be direct sown into containers which should be deep enough to support a tap root.

Grow & Harvest

Harvest the leaves once the plant is established, generally starting about 6 weeks from sowing.  The leaves will regrow after cutting.  Keep plants well-watered during dry spells.  In hot and dry conditions the plants may bolt, so provide enough shade and water to prevent this.  Leaves are not worth picking once the plant starts flowering.
