Baptisia australis 'Caspian Blue' / Blue False Indigo / Seeds

An attractive plant with indigo-blue lupin-like flowers in summer, typically June to August.  Plants have grey-green leaves and grow to a height of 1-1.5m.  These are good cut flowers, growing on upright stalks.  Has an RHS Award of Garden Merit.


Blue False Indigo grows best in full sun and well-drained neutral to acidic soil.  Plants are drought resistant once established and easy to maintain.


Pack of 20 seeds.  Sow anytime, typically spring to autumn.  Germination can be erratic, so sow more seeds than you need.

Conditions  Grow in sun and well-drained neutral to acidic soil.
Sow

Sow anytime, typically spring to autumn.  Pour hot water over the seeds and soak for 1-3 days, until the the seeds have started to swell.  Then sow 6mm deep in a tray of moist seed compost.  Spray with a garden fungicide to prevent damping off.  Keep at 20-25°C and germination takes 2-4 weeks. Germination can be erratic – sow more seeds than you need.  
Grow

Transplant seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle and out into the garden after the last frost.  Protect summer/autumn seedlings over the winter in a greenhouse or cold frame before planting out in the spring.  The leaves die back in winter, when they can be cleared away and they start growing again in spring.  Mature clumps can be divided in early spring.
