Arnica montana / Mountain Arnica / Seeds

A well-known medicinal plant and lovely daisy-like plant for the garden.  Arnica grows a rosette of leaves and tall flower spikes of yellow flowers from June to August.  Plants grow to about 75cm in height and look great in the middle of borders and in herb gardens.  Arnica has been used for centuries as a medicinal plant, with preparations made from fresh flowers in summer and from the rhizomes in autumn.  Parts of the plant are considered toxic and should not be used internally.

Arnica is an alpine plant from central Europe and grows best in moist, well drained neutral to slightly alkaline soil in full sun.

Hardiness Hardy perennial (RHS Hardiness H5)
Flowers June to August
Height 75cm
Spread 30 - 50cm
Conditions  Grow in full sun in moist but well-drained neutral to slightly alkaline soil
Sow

Sow in spring or autumn.  Sow to a depth of 1mm in moist seed compost.  Keep at 12-20°C and germination starts in 3-6 weeks, but can take several months.   Pot up and grow on until ready to plant out into the garden after the last frost.  Seedlings grow slowly at first.  Protect autumn seedlings in a greenhouse over winter. Do not fertilise, as these plants come from mountainous areas with naturally poor soils.

Grow

Once established these plants need little maintenance and will spread from undergrounds creepers.  Flowers and leaves die down in autumn, when they can be cleared up.
