Aquilegia alpina / Alpine Columbine / Wildflower / Seeds

An appealing original species of Columbine from the mountainous areas of Europe.  Plants grow mounds of neat fern-like leaves and short-spurred large blue flowers in the spring, from around May to June.  Plants grow to a height of about 40-60cm when in flower.  Great for the garden, for alpine and gravel gardens and for containers.

Alpine Columbines grow best in sun to part shade and moist, free-draining soils.  They self-seed once established.

Pack of approx 100 seeds.  Sow in spring to autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Hardy deciduous perennial (RHS Hardiness H5)
Flowers May to June
Height 40 - 60cm
Spread 20cm

Sow

Sow the seeds in spring to autumn into a tray of compost.  Cover the seeds very lightly with soil or vermiculite and keep at 15-20°C.   Do not exclude light.  Germination takes about 1-3 months and can be erratic.  Pot on when seedlings are large enough to handle.   Protect summer/autumn sowings in a greenhouse over the first winter.

Grow

Deadhead plants to encourage more flowers.  Cut back plants after flowering.  Plants will self-seed around the garden.  Mature plants can be divided in spring.
