Anemanthele lessoniana or Pheasant's Tail Grass / Seeds

An ornamental and graceful grass, with delicate spikes of rose-tinged flowers in mid to late summer.  These are semi-evergreen plants from New Zealand, with some leaves growing in gold and bronze, and prized particularly for these beautiful colours.  Plants grow to a height of about 60cm.  They are good for borders and cutting, and grow well in containers.  They wave in the wind and provide lovely movement in a border.  Has an RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Anemanthele grows best in sun to part shade and well-drained soil.  Plants are hardy to about -10°C, when they may die back in winter, and start growing again in spring.  They do not die back in warmer winters.  Plants grow into clumps and can be divided in spring.

Pack of approx 50 small seeds.  Sow anytime, typically spring to autumn. Germination is erratic, so sow more than you need.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Sow

Sow the seeds anytime, typically in the spring, and continuing into autumn.  Sow the seeds on the surface of a tray of compost, and cover very lightly with compost.  Do not cover small seeds.  Keep the tray at around 20°C and germination starts in a couple of weeks and can continue over several months.  Protect summer and autumn sowings over the first winter in a greenhouse or cold frame, and plant out in the spring.

Grow

These are low maintenance plants once established.   Comb out or trim back dead leaves in winter and spring and divide plants every 3 or 4 years in the spring to keep them in good shape.  These are semi-evergreen plants and they may die back in colder gardens and colder winters, but will regrow if the conditions remain above -10°C.  These are good pot plants so some can be kept in a greenhouse over winter if necessary.
