Anchusa capensis 'Blue Angel' / Cape Forget-Me-Not / Seeds

Cape Forget-Me-Nots are great border plants and attractive cut flowers.  Plants grow on sturdy stems to a height of 30-40cm with masses of brilliant-blue flowers in midsummer, typically from July to the end of August.  The plants are attractive to bees and butterflies and the flowers are edible.  


Anchusa grows best in sun to part shade and poor, well-drained soils.   

 

Pack of approx 300 seeds.  Sow outdoors directly into the ground in spring or autumn or sow indoors in spring.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Conditions  Sun to part shade and poor well drained soils
Sow Sow the seeds directly into prepared ground in late spring/early summer or autumn (in warmer gardens).  Rake over lightly and keep moist until seedlings are established.   Germination takes 2-4 weeks.  Or sow indoors in spring or autumn into a tray or modules of compost.  Cover lightly with compost and do not exclude light, which helps germination.  Keep at 18-20°C and germination takes 1-3 weeks.  Transplant seedlings into pots when they are big enough to handle and into the garden in early summer.  Protect autumn sowings in a greenhouse or cold frame over winter, before planting out in late spring.
Grow Deadhead plants after the first flush of flowers and a second batch of flowers may appear in late summer.  Although these are natural short-lived perennials, they are best grown as annuals in the UK. Remove the plants after they have finished flowering in autumn or winter and start again from seed.  Plants may self seed in the right conditions if the flowers are left to die back on the plants in autumn.
