Ageratum houstonianum 'Florist Blue' / Mexican Paintbrush / Seeds

Ageratums are long-flowering plants for the border and for cut flowers. Plants grow strong stems of true blue ‘pussy foot’ fluffy flowers from July to September.  These bushy plants grow to a height of about 60cm and attract pollinators into the garden.  The strong stems of this variety make it a good cut flower.

Ageratums grow best in a sunny position in moist but well drained soil.  They are half hardy and need protecting from frost. They are traditional medicinal plants with potential anti-bacterial properties.

Pack of approx 2000 seeds.  Sow the seeds indoors in spring, or directly in the ground outside in late spring after the risk of frost has past.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Hardiness Half hardy annual (RHS Hardiness H2)
Flowers July to September
Height 60cm
Spread 30cm
Conditions  Sun and moist well-drained soil
Sow

Sow the seeds indoors in spring on the surface of modules of compost. Press the seeds into the compost, but do not cover with compost, as light is needed for germination.  Keep at 15-20°C and germination takes 2- 3 weeks.  Plant out after hardening off, taking care not to disturb the roots. Or sow the seeds directly into cultivated ground in late spring, after the risk of frost has passed.

Grow Plants grow in the spring, flower in summer and die back in autumn after flowering, when they can be cut back and removed.
