Sow in a tray of soil compost, with a very light covering of compost or vermiculite. Do not exclude light, which helps germination. Keep at 15-20°C and germination starts in about 2 weeks and takes up to 3 months. Pot on when seedlings are big enough to handle and plant out after the last frost into sun or part shade and well-drained soil. Deadhead to prolong flowering. Sow by March for 1st year flowering from August. |
Grow |
Early sowings flower in the first season, others flower in the second season. These are just-hardy plants and they need well-drained soil to survive winter. Protect young shoots from hard frosts in spring. The leaves and flowers die down in winter, when the dead material can be cleared away, and they start growing again in spring. |
