Achillea filipendulina ‘Cloth of Gold’ / Yarrow / Seeds

A lovely variety of Achillea with light green leaves and tall golden yellow flower heads.  Plants flower all summer from June to September and do well with very little effort. They grow to a height of 1.2-1.5m and look good with other Achilleas and taller Echinaceas.

Achillea ‘Cloth of Gold’ grows best in sun and not-too-fertile well drained soil.  Plants are drought tolerant once established and attract pollinating insects into the garden.

Pack of approx 1000 seeds.  Sow in spring to autumn.  Sowing instructions and a colour photo are printed on the packet.

Conditions  Plant out in a sunny position in not-too-fertile well-drained soil.
Sow Sow in spring to autumn in a tray of moist seed compost, with a light covering of compost.  Sow these small seeds sparingly to avoid clumping of young seedlings.  Do not exclude light, which is needed for germination.  Keep at 18-24 °C and germination takes 2-3 weeks. Pot on when seedlings are big enough to handle and plant out after the last frost, and after hardening off. Protect autumn seedlings over the winter in a greenhouse or cold frame, before planting out in the spring.
Grow

Plants flower in the second season.  Achilleas are quite tall plants and benefit from staking.  Without staking, they are prone to falling later in the season after heavy wind or rain.   You can create more compact plants by giving them the ‘Chelsea Chop’ – cut off the top 1/3rd of growth at the time of the Chelsea Flower Show (late May) and the plants grow smaller and bushier with more flowers.
